Its history dates back to 1876 and Alexander Graham Bell\u2019s invention of the telephone.<\/p><p>It was previously known as \u201cMa Bell.\u201d It was a monopoly that helped build much of the United States\u2019 long-distance telephone services.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5222fd e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c5222fd\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-785ec8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"785ec8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Inception<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c862433 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c862433\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAT&amp;T Company began as Bell Telephone in 1877. Graham founded it a year after he invented the telephone. The company set up the first private phone line between Boston and Somerville, Massachusetts.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dec0174 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"dec0174\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1127835 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1127835\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1870s - 1970s<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8b862e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b8b862e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Alexander Graham Bell and another inventor, Elisha Gray were working on similar telephonic devices. They each filed patent documents in Washington, D.C., on February 14, 1876, on the same day.<\/p><p>Bell was granted Patent US174465A on March 7, 1876, and has been called the father of telephony. They launched the Bell Telephone Co., which was formed by Bell and two investors, Gardiner C. Hubbard and Thomas Sanders, in 1877.<\/p><p>Bell underwent some legal tussles in the following decade, and it was not until 1885 that AT&amp;T was formed as the Bell Telephone &amp; Telegraph Co., responsible for creating long-distance telephone lines.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d71079 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d71079\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1926<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4481b6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4481b6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAT&amp;T brought sound to Hollywood by inventing Sound Motion Pictures. In 1926, Warner Bros premiered Don Juan, the first full length film with sound and audio effects.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4ba677 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e4ba677\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1929<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c259edf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c259edf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: 15px;\">The company invented the first broadband media, the broadband coaxial cable. This led to the intercity transmission of moving images, which made way for television.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7ce611 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e7ce611\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1947<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1901f69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1901f69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe company invented the Transistor in 1947, which became a symbol of the starting of modern electronics. There was an advantage to this, and that was it\u2019s lightweight, tiny and does not overheat.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40c8de5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"40c8de5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1954<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b819a3c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b819a3c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe first practical solar battery was invented that could only convert 6% of the sunlight into usable energy. Each was the size of a razor blade.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8dbf935 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8dbf935\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1969<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1602a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1602a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAT&amp;T Bell Telephone Laboratories researchers developed the UNIX computer-operating system in 1969. Two years later, UNIX became the first truly portable computer operating system.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f3434a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6f3434a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1972\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e116b7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e116b7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe company devised what was called Automatic Switching for Mobile Communications. This technology enables the cellphone to automatically transfer from one tower to another as one drives down the road.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f3c908 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9f3c908\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8753f62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8753f62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1974 - 1984<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba4e474 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba4e474\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1974, the U.S. Department of Justice set out to take the monopoly. It took a full decade to conclude an agreement that compelled AT&amp;T to divest itself and become a separate entity.<\/p><p>That was the end of Ma Bell\u2019s reign. He divided the company into three separate entities. It was the largest corporate breakup in history.<\/p><ul><li>AT&amp;T Corp provides long-distance telecommunications services.<\/li><li>Lucent Technologies produced marketed telephones, computer chips, and other hardware.<\/li><li>NCR Corp manufactured computers, electronic cash registers, and other data-processing systems.<\/li><\/ul><p>Two years after the dismantling became official, Edward Whiteacre was named chair and chief executive of Southwestern Bell. He started his telephone industry career doing repair work in Texas.<\/p><p>In 1995, Whiteacre transformed the Southwestern Bell name to SBC Communications Inc. In the next decade, he focused on rebuilding what the Government had torn apart. SBC merged with AT&amp;T Corp. The merged company would be called AT&amp;T.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45b9cb3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"45b9cb3\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7927401 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7927401\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2007 \u2013 2020<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2053db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2053db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Randall Stephenson was another chief executive who wanted to reform AT&amp;T. He worked his way to the top through the finance division and was named finance chief before becoming chief executive in 2007.<\/p><p>Stephenson\u2019s tenure involved acquisitions where some were good, some questionable, and some bad. The agenda was to diversify and accelerate the size of the company.<\/p><p>In March 2011, AT&amp;T launched a $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile (TMUS) that would become the largest cellular carrier in the U.S.<\/p><p>Five years later, he ventured down another path, which was the media and entertainment industry. He planned to combine AT&amp;T networks with Time Warner\u2019s.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-314a116 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"314a116\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e4db57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1e4db57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2016 - 2022<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d28d4a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d28d4a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In late 2016, AT&amp;T declared its plan to merge its broadband and wireless networks with Time Warner\u2019s film and animation, which ranged from HBO and CNN to Harry Potter and other superhero franchises.<\/p><p>However, the deal faced obstacles from the beginning, including an antitrust suit. After months of negotiations, a district judge sided with AT&amp;T and pushed the deal through. It shut down in 2018.<\/p><p>The next four years took a topsy-turvy turn. There was a cultural crash between AT&amp;T and Time Warner.<\/p><p>In 2020, Randall Stephenson retired and handed the company over to John Stankey. He sold off pieces of the company to focus on the future.<\/p><p>By May 2021, AT&amp;T announced it would spin off WarnerMedia, which would merge Discovery\u2019s reality cable and television channels.<\/p><p>In 2022, AT&amp;T decided to sell WarnerMedia\u2019s entertainment division to Discovery, Inc. At a sale price of $43 billion, AT&amp;T recouped only half of what it had paid to acquire WarnerMedia just four years
